A new organization helping feed Boundary County residents in need will celebrate its first anniversary with a party in downtown Bonners Ferry on Aug. 29.

The 43-member group known as GROW, which has donated hundreds of pounds of vegetables from its garden to the local food bank, will host free music from 6 p.m. to midnight, said Jason Thomas, president of GROW. Beginning at 9:30, the Day Off Band from Bonners Ferry will play,

“The dance is free,” Thomas said. “This is going to be one of the bigger events in the community.”

The evening will include a barbecue, featuring meat from Wood’s north of Sandpoint and three to four salads for $8.

“The salads will come right out of the garden,” Thomas said.

GROW, which stands for Gardeners for Regional Organic Well Being, has a community garden near Trinity Lutheran Church. About 40 people have plots within that garden, Thomas said.

GROW’s second garden is near Boundary Community Hospital. Vegetables including spinach, broccoli and carrots, from that garden go to the food bank.

GROW also is also raising $1,000 to buy non-perishable items for the food bank.

Next year, GROW hopes to have enough money to employ a part-timer to help with the gardens That person would mow, take care weeds and help at the Farmers’ Market on Saturdays, when GROW sells produce.
