Much Good Road Work Done

In a statement issued recently, Forest Supervisor Fitzwater reports that the county and Forest Service have expended $3,498 on the Addie Eastport Road, which resulted in greatly improving the highway.

A balance of $5,000 is on hand for use on the road from Addie to Meadow Creek, a distance of about 10 miles.

It is expected that work on this stretch will begin next month.  By connecting this road to Meadow Creek, there will be a through road from Bonners Ferry to the Canadian line, and travelers will not then have to go into Montana to  get to Canada.

The county meets the Forest Service half way.  In all road work, and Supervisor Fitzwater reports that the service has asked the commissioners for $1,500 for the road from Meadow Creek to Bonners Ferry, which if granted, will make $3,000 available.

This will be sufficient to improve the worst part of the road.  A request for $2,500 for the Addie-Copeland Road has been made, which will give $5,000 for the work.  Supervisor Fitzwater states that next to the Moyie Road, this is the most needed improvement north of Bonners Ferry.  No survey has been made of this road and it is not known how far the $5,000 will go.

Suspect Foul Play

Neighbors of Sam Floaten, the Great Northern trackwalker  was recently killed by a passing train. They suspected that the man killed might have met with foul play last week asked Sheriff Remer to investigate the matter, their suspicious having been aroused by the fact that the man was known to have had between $25 and $40 on him before he was killed and only a few cents in his pockets was found.

Several men had been near the body  before the coroner removed it and while the sheriff was satisfied the dead man’s pockets had been rifled, he could not fasten the guilt on anyone.  There is no doubt, however, that Floaten was struck and killed by a train.
