The Lady Badgers are top seeded for the District I 3A Girls Basketball tournament,  which opens today, Feb. 12,  at Lakeland High School.  Bonners Ferry and Timberlake tied for first place in the Intermountain League and the Lady Badgers won the coin toss and a first round bye.

Bonners Ferry will play the Priest River/ Kellogg game winner at 7:30 p.m. today.

On Saturday the Bonners Ferry girls beat St. Maries 56-40 at home.

Caitlin Clausen led the Lady Badgers with 11 points, including 8  in the first quarter, and 11 rebounds.  Ashley Winkelseth added 9 points, 13 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists.

“Offensively we did a great job. We are rebounding better also,” said coach Travis Hinthorn. “We still need to do a better job defending the three.”

Bonners Ferry had another win Friday night at home against Orofino, 59-15.  All 11 players scored in a balanced scoring attack, Hinthorn said.

In the second half, the Lady Badgers held Orofino to 2 points.

“Hopefully we are peaking at the right time,” said Hinthorn. “If we play like this at Districts, we will be okay.”

The balanced team game was led by Erin Hiatt scoring 7 points and making 5 steals, 8 rebounds and 4 assists.  Hallie Payne added 7 rebounds and 6 points.

The Lady Badgers IML standings are 8-2 and 13-5 overall.
