Jack Messick has been building custom log furniture in Bonners Ferry for more than 20 years.

The owner of Custom Design Furniture worked in maintenance for Rocky Mountain Academy in the 1980’s and was approached to build log beds for the school.  Soon after, he began building more log furniture and dressers for the school.  It kept him so busy that he had to either continue his  maintenance job or  build furniture.

Messick chose building furniture, and for two decades has supported his family with a thriving business with repeat and new customers interested in unique furniture.

“Providing well-designed quality furniture that is affordable and made to last has kept me a busy man,” said Messick. “The beds are the most popular items that sell.”

He also designs and builds tables, chairs, night stands and entertainment centers of lodgepole pine from local mills.  Messick can design all types of custom furniture and loves the challenge of something new.

The decline in the timber industry has not been an issue for Messick.  He is as busy as ever and only slows down in the winter  enough to take a breath and begin again.

“This winter has not been any slower than most,” said Messick. “This is as retired as I will ever be.  I have been blessed.”
