During the first half of Saturday night’s non-league match-up between Bonners Ferry and Sandpoint, the Badgers kept the Bulldogs within reach.
That changed in the second half.
Sandpoint led 27-20 at the half, but outscored the Badgers 35-21 in the third and fourth quarters before winning 62-41.
“(It was) a disappointing loss especially in front a tremendous crowd,” said Badger coach Gordon Allured.
A spirit contest between the two schools was held during the game. The first-ever Moose Madness attracted a record 1,100 people to the Bonners Ferry High School gymnasium.
“We had a pretty good start, but didn’t carry it through,” Allured said. “We still have a few players not at 100 percent due to injury, and we are still struggling with chemistry. We are getting better, and with a more consistent game schedule, we hope to continue to improve.”
Badger Miguel Mendez led scoring with 8 points. Colton Watt added 7.
“The team would also like to congratulate all the people that were involved in making Moose Madness a huge success,” Allured said. “We are disappointed we didn’t come away with a victory.”
In Intermountain League action, the Badgers lost 65-51 to Priest River on Jan. 15.
“We didn’t come out ready to play and fell behind early,” Allured said. “We were down 23-9 with about 1:30 left in the first quarter, but played them even the rest of the game and even went ahead 39-38 late in the third quarter. It was our best outing this season and we talked about how we need to build on the effort.”
Dillon Deitz and Aaron Hoisington led in scoring with 11 points each. Mendez added 8.
