• Lillie Blackwell spent two weeks in Hawaii “working” — that is house-sitting for former Bonners Ferry resident Jim Burkholder and his wife, Ruth, when they went to Washington, D.C.

Lillie took her daughter, RoseMarie Smith, and grandson, Joshua Smith, both from Vancouver, Wash. They went shopping, snorkeling, and visited Polynesian Cultural Center and Pearl Harbor. They also went to a luau.

While in Hawaii, Lillie and her family met up with Lillie’s nephew, Joe Stockdale, and Joe’s son, Aaron. They spent the day parasailing and jet skiing.

• Linda Tanaka was recently appointed vice chairwoman of public relations for Hall Mountain Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary.

Linda’s duties include reporting news of the fire department, auxiliary activities and events, advertising dinners and parades, and promoting community functions.

• Brittany Burkholder is visiting her grandmother, Valdie Burkholder, from Honolulu, Hawaii. Brittany is the daughter of Jim and Ruth Burkholder.

Brittany is majoring in Asian studies at University of Hawaii, where she also belongs to ROTC. She hopes to become a pilot with the Air Force.

During her visit, Brittany has gone huckleberry picking, canoeing on the Kootenai River, and traveled to Ainsworth Hotsprings in Canada and Silverwood.

This was the first time Brittany visited Bonners Ferry in more than four years.

“The town looks really nice,” she said. “I was impressed with what I saw.”

• Cynthia Goodanetz is observing the 40th anniversary of man’s first walk on the moon with an astronaut on display in her backyard.

Cynthia, who lives off McArthur Lake Road, made his space suit from a paper painter’s outfit. She made the oxygen pack with a dish pan from Walmart and got a helmet in a free pile at a yard sale. Cynthia used aluminum foil for around his shins and wrist.

Cynthia has done other things with her mannequin, which was originally put up to keep the deer out. She has dressed it up as a hunter, fisherman and a bum during the recession.

• Out-of-town guests for Saturday’s Bonners Ferry High School Class of 1999 reunion were Tess Shepard from Philadelphia and Amanda Ashby from Salem, Ore.

Among local guests were Abby and Willie Maas and Tom Dinning. Coming from the Coeur d’Alene area were Todd Bateman and Ari Small.

Alumni gathered on Friday at Kootenai River Inn for a meet and greet. A family event was held Saturday morning at Boundary County Fairgrounds and the dinner was Saturday night at the Great Northwest Territories Event Center in Naples.

• Brenda Liermann caught a 50-pound halibut during a five-day trip to Homer, Alaska. Brenda and her husband, Dennis, took the trip for their 35th wedding anniversary and Brenda’s birthday. Both were on July 20.

The Liermanns traveled 33 miles out on the ocean and were able to catch two fish a day. They brought home 53 pounds of halibut.
