Hampton state wrestling runner-up
Bonners Ferry High School sophomore Trevor Hampton finished as the runner-up in the 135-pound class during the 3A state tournament in Pocatello last weekend.
Hampton, who was seeded third, pinned the second-seeded wrestler from Shelly in the semi-finals before losing to top-seeded Mike Villalpando from Fruitland in the finals.
An injury resulted in defending state champion Dayne Swisher placing fourth in the 140-pound class.
During the semi-finals, the senior Badger hyper extended his elbow and could hardly move his left arm, said coach Conrad Garner. Swisher lost the match 6-4, but came back to pin his next opponent. In his final match, Swisher was ahead, but landed on his injured elbow.
In other news from the state tournament, Ben Watt placed fourth in 119-pound class.
Brandon Schmitz placed an unofficial eighth in 135 class.
“He made it to the quarter finals (against the top-seeded wrestler) and had a heck of a match (before losing) 8-1,” Garner said. “That kid was totally frustrated with him (Schmitz). He couldn’t dominate Brandon the way he should’ve.”
Also placing an unofficial eighth was David Willems at 215.
Isaiah Grey was injured during his first match in the 145-pound class and could not continue.
First-year wrestler Beau Cowley lost his first two matches.
