Ten timber-related jobs are expected to be created in Boundary County thanks to the $787 billion in federal stimulus money.

The Northern Region of the Forest Service and the Idaho Department of Lands will receive $2 million to beef up existing programs to thin dead and dying trees and vegetation that can fuel a forest fire. Work begin this spring on state and private lands in four North Idaho counties, including Boundary, said Nelle Coler, contract specialist with the Panhandle Area Council.

Right now, logging companies, independent contractors and tree removal companies provide the service, Coler said. The jobs will be created because they will need more people to do the work.

“We hope to see job vendors, who are currently working, to retain jobs or take one more personnel,” she said. “We also hope to see job vendors who are currently there.”

The money must be spent in two years.

“We will apply for grant funding to increase the amount of work (after that),” Coler said.

Those interested in the jobs should apply through their Idaho Department of Labor in Bonners Ferry, which is behind Badger’s Den. The telephone number is 267-5581.

“It’s very hands-on and labor-intensive work,” Coler said.

Contractors wishing to be in the hazardous fuels reduction program should call Coler at 772-0584, ext. 3012.
