Bonners Ferry couple proves it's never too late to find love

Lon Huggins and Hazel McGlocklin have proven that love is timeless.  Huggins, 82, and McGlocklin, 88, were married on March 6, after a three-year courtship at Hazel’s  home, surrounded by family and friends.

Huggins came to Bonners Ferry in 1942.  He was married to his first wife for 26 years until she passed away.  Huggins remarried, but divorced 13 years later.

McGlocklin moved to Bonners Ferry in 1967.  She was married to her first husband for 32 years until his passing.  McGlocklin remarried and was married to her second husband for 20 years until losing him to cancer.

Huggins and McGlocklin at one time were in-laws.   Huggins’ daughter  and McGlocklin’s son divorced more than 20 years ago.

Huggins and McGlocklin have known each other for over 35 years.

The couple met again at Bonners Ferry Hospitality Center, where they became reacquainted.

“I asked Hazel to come to my 80th birthday celebration and she said ‘yes,’” said Huggins.

Shortly after, Huggins, who is a diabetic, had a blackout while driving and wrecked his car.  No one was hurt but according to Huggins the sheriff thought he shouldn’t have a driver’s license due to his medical condition.  That is when McGlocklin, who still drives, stepped up to help Huggins with transportation.

“She started to come and see me and then offered to drive me since I wasn’t able to,” said Huggins.

“He wasn’t feeling well  and I wanted to help him, so I would take him where he needed to go,” McGlocklin added.  “Pretty soon he started to feel better and we decided to get married and then he felt great.”

“I knew that she had 20 cents so I asked her to marry me because I thought I could borrow part of it,” Huggins joked.

Huggins has three daughters, who are married and a son.  McGlocklin has three sons who are all married.

They both have been through highs and lows, but the silver lining is the Bonners Ferry couple was brought together at the right time, and have given others the hope of finding love no matter what their age.
