Bonners Ferry High School Junior Erin Hiatt has a shot at winning a state title, according to track coach Travis Hinthorn.

“I think Erin has a great chance of winning the 800,” Hinthorn said. “Her time is 3 seconds faster than the next best time in 3A and she took fifth last year.”

Hiatt will be among more than 50 Badgers hoping to qualify for the state meet during the District 1 meet on Friday, May, 8, and Saturday, May 9, at Timberlake High School.

Others with a chance to make it to the state meet include freshman sprinter Rock Stapley, junior hurdle runner Colton Watt and senior discus and shot put thrower Alicia Hedrick.

Hinthorn also believes Hiatt has a chance at qualifying for the 300 hurdles.

“She has the endurance and she’s learning to become a better hurdler,” Hinthorn said. “She could probably qualify for six events. We are trying to figure out what events.”

In addition to the 800 and 300 hurdles, Hiatt is expected to compete in the pole vault and on the medley relay team at the district meet.

Stapley, who took second in the 100 with a run off 11.66 during last week’s the District 1 All-Star meet, could place at the state meet, Hinthorn said.

“That was a great time and at a meet competing against big schools with juniors and seniors,” Hinthorn said.

From the all-star meet at Post Falls High School, Hiatt placed in three events, including first in the 800-meter run. The meet was open to the top ranking finishers in the district, regardless of classification. Schools represented including Coeur d’Alene, Sandpoint and Lakeland
