Badger Boys begin IML Season with win over Orofino

The Bonners Ferry Badger boys’ soccer team began its Intermountain League season with a 3–0 win at Orofino on Saturday. 

The Badgers, (1–0, 1–3 overall) scored three first-half goals and dominated play throughout in the relatively easy win. 

Sophomore forward Andre Zarate scored in the 12th and 20th minutes, both times off assists from sophomore midfielder Hayden Wakkinen, to get the Badgers rolling. 

In the 28th minute, senior defender Carey Reynolds converted a failed clearing attempt by the Maniacs off a corner kick, slamming home an 18-yard shot that gave Bonners a 3–0 lead. There were several scoring opportunities in the second half with each narrowly missing the goal.  Bonners outshot Orofino 12 – 2.

Earlier in the week, the Badgers went on the road to face Sandpoint and Coeur d’Alene, dropping both contests by 4–0 and 5–0 , respectively.

Bonners competed well against the Bulldogs, playing evenly throughout the first half before allowing two late goals to trail 2–0 at halftime. 

Sandpoint scored twice late in the game to put the game away. 

Against Coeur d’Alene, the Badgers came out flat, and were outplayed from the beginning.  The Vikings led 2 – 0 at the half and put the game away early in the second half to win going away.    

The Badgers open their home season Saturday at 10 a.m. against Stillwater Christian of Kalispell.              

Badger current stats:  1–3, losses to Moscow 2-1, Sandpoint 4-0, and Coeur d’Alene 5-0.  Our lone win was over Orofino 3-0.
