At least 20 drivers will attempt to win the $2,000 grand prize during the Saturday, Sept. 12,  Bonners Ferry Lions Club annual Demolition Derby at Boundary County Fairgrounds.

Terry Johnson, who volunteers to help the Lions Club with the derby, said the number of entrants has declined in recent years, yet the event is always a good fundraiser.

“We’re hoping to get at least 20 cars,” Johnson said. “It’s been dropping off the last few years,”

This year’s 7 p.m. derby will see the return of pickups, compact cars and the powder puff division.

Registration for the derby will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Gates open at 6. The entry fee is $50. Pit crew members will pay $10 each with a maximum of four allowed.

The cost to get into the derby is $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12. Tickets are $5 for event standing.

The second-place winner of the main event will receive $1,000 with a trophy. The third-place winner will get $500 and a trophy.

Fourth and fifth place finishers will receive $350 and $200. Best of show will receive $50 and the most aggressive driver will get $50.

All heats will be done with a division of eight. The top three to four from each event will advance to the main event.

The number of women who run in the powder puff event at the end depends on the number of cars still running. Often women racers will run in their boyfriend or husband’s car.

“We always manage to have a powder puff,” Johnson said.
