Melayne Stevens of Paradise Valley won a new John Deere mower in a drawing held by Second Chance Animal Adoption.

There was one problem. Melayne and her husband, Michael, don’t have a lawn so they plan to sell the mower and donate a good portion of the money to Second Chance.

“We live in the woods,” Michael said about winning the mower.

Melayne volunteers for Second Chance. Every weekend she cleans the cat cages and makes a dump run for the thrift store. Melayne also sold tickets for the mower raffle.

Chris Mayti from Columbia Tractor donated the mower, valued at $2,200. Second Chance raised $5,000, which pleased SCAA Executive Director Rhonda Hamerslough.

“In a difficult economy when many can focus only on how they will put food on the table, Chris Mayti performed a benevolent act by donating a riding lawnmower to Second Chance Animal Adoption for a fundraiser,” Hamerslough said.

“I was blown away when he agreed to do this for SCAA and cannot thank him enough.”

She also thanked those who purchased tickets. Proceeds will go toward building an animal shelter in Boundary County.

• Bonners Ferry firefighter Lee Colson reported that Jared Mendenhall won a Rutger 1022 with digital cammo and an extra 25 round clip.

Their winning ticket was drawn at the Boundar County Fair's Family Fun Night. The gun was purchased from Far North Outfitters by the Smoke Eaters. Smoke Eaters are members of the Bonners Ferry Volunteer Fire Department.
