Boys soccer team wins two, 3-0 in league
The Bonners Ferry Boy’s Soccer Team ran its Intermountain league record to 3–0 with a pair of league victories last week.
The Badgers defeated Priest River 3–0 on the road Thursday and then outscored St. Maries 4–2 at home Saturday to up their overall record to 5–3.
Against the Spartans, the Badgers played to a scoreless draw at half, then scored all three goals in a 10-minute span of the second half. Sophomore Andre Zarate got Bonners on the board in the 52nd minute, converting a pass from junior Aaron Moe to make it 1 – 0. Moe followed up six minutes later on a short shot after receiving a nice crossing pass from sophomore midfielder Hayden Wakkinen. Zarate earned a penalty kick four minutes later, and senior defender and co-captain Blake Skjeveland put the kick from 12 yards into the upper right corner to complete the scoring. Bonners outshot Priest River 20 – 3, with all of the Badgers suited up seeing playing time.
On Saturday, the Badgers jumped out to a quick 1 – 0 lead after Zarate scored on an 18-yard blast from the right side after receiving a pass from Moe. The Lumberjacks evened the score in the 25th minute on a close-range goal off a corner kick. Zarate put the Badgers up to stay with his eighth goal of the season in the 29th minute, which was followed by fellow sophomore Daniel Palacios’ goal two minutes before halftime off an assist from Zarate to make it 3 – 1 Bonners. St. Maries countered with a quick goal to open the second half. The Badgers continued to dominate the majority of play, and sealed the victory in the 76th minute when junior midfielder Alex Mendez cranked in a 20-yard shot. Bonners outshot St. Maries 15 – 6, with junior goalkeeper Mat Evans making three saves.
The Badgers continue league play this Saturday in St. Maries, with three home games next week against Priest River on Tuesday, Libby on Thursday, and Orofino on Saturday.
