County awarded $7,759, shelter grant

BONNERS FERRY — Boundary County was recently awarded a $7,759 federal grant to assist with emergency food and shelter programs in the county.

Awarded under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board program, Boundary County was selected by a national board chaired by the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency, with representation from the American Red Cross, Catholic Charities USA, the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA, the Jewish Federations of North America, the Salvation Army and United Way Worldwide.

To determine how best to distribute the funds, a local board consisting of chairman County Commissioner Dan Dinning and members Linda Aitken, Father Gregory Horten, Barbara Kovacs, Deacon Joe Nicholas, Lorraine Nicholas, Tom Peyton, Pastor Steve Robbins and Christine Villaneuva has been created.

The board is seeking applications from interested agencies through April 6.

To qualify, the agency must be a private voluntary non-profit or unit of government eligible to receive federal funds; have an accounting system in place, practice non-discrimination and have the demonstrated ability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter in time of need.
