BONNERS FERRY — Fee increases to renew or buy a new passport are on the horizon.

Soon it will cost more to renew or buy a new passport.

Tracie Issac, chief deputy clerk, said she has received notice of the increased fees but doesn’t know when they will take effect.

For first-time applicants, the passport book fee is going to increase to $135 from $100.  The passport card fee is going to increase to $55 from $45.

For adults, passport book renewal will increase to $110 from $75 and the passport card renewal will increase to $30 from $20.

For minors (those under 16), the passport book fee will increase to $105 from $85 and the passport card fee will increase to $40 from $35.

All first-time application fees listed above include the $25 acceptance fee.

For those who need additional visa pages, it will cost $82. The expedited service fee will still be $60.

Fee increases are based on a  Cost of Service Study conducted in June 2009 and represent a cost correction from the last update four years ago.

Passports are valid for ten years for adults and five years for minors.

U.S. Passport Cards allow land or sea travel to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda, but cannot be used for international air travel.
