Downhill bike races return to region

After a five-year hiatus, downhill mountain bike racing is back at Schweitzer Mountain Resort. The All Gravity Series brings stop number 3.5 to Schweitzer’s newly constructed pro downhill trail, Redemption, on Aug. 21-22.

The All Gravity Series is a USA Cycling sanctioned race series including stops around eastern Washington and northern Idaho. The race features three racing categories; pro, intermediate and beginner.

Pro (category 1) will race down Schweitzer’s newest trail, Redemption. This 1,300-foot vertical drop trail features everything from rock gardens, step downs, drops and natural jumps.

“We’re really stoked about this new trail,” said Schweitzer Events Manager Brandon Peterson. “It’s a highly technical course and should offer challenges to even the best riders.”

Beginners (category 3) and intermediates (category 2), will race down a black diamond course from the Pinch Flat Trail to Moffitt’s Edge to the Collector Trail.

“This event is going to be exciting for all riders and anyone interested in watching,” added Peterson.

The All Gravity Series will be taking the place of a former downhill race that was scheduled to be held at Schweitzer on the same weekend. Circumstance beyond Schweitzer’s control caused that race to be cancelled.
