The Bonners Ferry women’s varsity basketball team opened up with a lead against non-league opponent Newport, but could not find the key to winning the game, losing to Newport 43-57.

The Badgers opened up strong, coming away from the first period with a 16-11 lead. Bonners found themselves in the second period with ball handling issues and rebounding problems. Newport fought back and ended the second period with the lead, 22-32.

Turnovers and rebound set the tone for the second half. The Badgers fought hard and played with a lot of intensity but still found themselves down at the end of the third period 32-46.

Bonners Ferry found a little foul trouble in the fourth period and ultimately lost the non-league game to Newport 43-57.

The Badgers posted 21 rebounds as compared to Newport’s 32. The Badgers also turned the ball over 29 times while Newport only lost the ball 23 times.

Badger women’s varsity head Coach Travis Hinthorn said that the girls gave a much better effort in this game and he was happy about that since that was an area of focus coming into the game.

Hinthorn also said “we had a great first quarter, but I don’t know if we got tied or just relaxed a bit, but after that our turnovers just took off and with the turnovers came internal pressure.”

Badger senior post Markayle Acord lead the team with 13 points, freshman Aubree Wasmer added 10 points while junior Amanda Riley scored 10 points, had four assists and three steals.

Sophomore Courtney Tucker added six points and senior Amy Andrews contributed four points.
