10 Bonners Ferry wrestlers qualify for state tournament

Ten Bonners Ferry wrestlers qualified for the 3A State Tournament in Pocatello, including five who won District 1 titles at Lakeland High School last weekend.

District champions included Blaine Invernon (103), Ben Watt (135), Trevor Hampton (140), Isaiah Gray (145) and David Willems (215).

Also earning bids to state were Josh Tucker (103), and Dustin Koehler (125), both of whom placed second at the district tournament.

Justin Spease (189) placed third, allowing him to advance to the state tournament. Fourth-place district finishers advancing to states are Tyson Boorman (112) and Zach Heigle (171).

Bonners Ferry placed second at the district tournament, 15 points behind champion Priest River. The Badgers trailed the Spartans by 41 points going into finals.

“We just couldn’t catch them,” said Badger Coach Conrad Garner. “They caught us in the consolation matches. If we could’ve split them, we could’ve caught them was pretty pleased with the kids,”

Priest River won the 3A title for the fourth consecutive year. It was strength in numbers for the Spartans, who despite not claiming one individual title, will take 12 wrestlers to state.

The two-day state wrestling tournament opens Friday.
