Traditions to highlight fair

BONNERS FERRY — While no big changes are in store, this year's Boundary County Fair is going to be something special.

 This year’s fair marks a historic occasion — 90 years of fair fun.

Fair secretary Sandy Schnepf said fair-goers just seem happier when they aren't faced with a lot of new things.

“People seem to prefer a traditional fair,” she said. “We've tried bringing in new things in the past, and most often they're not that well received.”

And this year's theme focuses on tradition, “Let's Celebrate 90 Years of Fair Fun!”

All the things that bring people to the fair will be there; from animals and flowers to fruits, vegetables, arts and crafts, photography, food and fun.

There will, however, be one thing new to see; a brand-new “crow's nest,” thanks to the Friends of the Fair, who pulled together donations and volunteers to build the new announcer's booth at no cost to the county taxpayer.

“They do a lot for our community and our fair,” Schnepf said, “and they'll be a big part of this year's fair as well.”

As they have for the past several years, the Friends of the Fair will be running the Country Store with proceeds going back into the fair, and they welcome donations. If you have items that would go well, call Judith Regehr, 267-2579.

The fair opens officially at 7 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, though stock entry and weigh-in take place Tuesday.

Opening ceremonies begin in the indoor arena at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, followed by opening of the exhibit and Memorial Hall until closing at 9 p.m.

The parade takes place at noon Saturday, Aug. 21, followed by a bunch of fun events, including lawn mower races, a pumpkin seed spitting contest, watermelon eating contest, Family Fun Night at 6:30 p.m. and the free Family Fun Night Dance, following the family fun activities.

Fair books are available throughout the community, including the Bonners Ferry Herald, the fair office and the county extension office, and nominations are currently being accepted for this year's “Fairest of the Fair,” with nomination forms available in the fair book.
