Youth group repairs fairgrounds skate park
BONNERS FERRY — The youth of Boundary County spent time making improvements at the skate park at Boundary County Fairgrounds.
Quest Youth Ministries from the Springs of the Living Water Free Methodist Church took a group of 35 teens led by Squire Fields, youth minister, to the park on May 15.
The teens spent the day and repaired, restored, cleaned cement and the quarter pipe, and replaced old wood that was rotting away with fresh new wood.
The teens collected $600 worth of materials from community members to completely restore the skate park.
“The wood was rotted through to the frames of structures and it really wasn’t safe anymore,” said Fields. “We hope the kids after doing the work themselves will take care of the park and take pride in their work.”
Fields concentrates on getting the teens involved in community projects. He said they took on the skate park because kids have no where to skate other than in the streets. The skate park was falling apart. This s one of the few activities children and teens like can do in Bonners Ferry and the need was there, according to Fields.
The youth ministry group is taking donations for their Quest Closet event. They are collecting gently used clothing for junior high and high school age teens.
The clothes will be given away during the free event which will take place before school starts in the fall. Cash donations are accepted as well.
“When you give this many teens a chance to make a difference in their community and give them leadership for a good cause, they can be an unstoppable force,” Fields said.
