Boundary County Middle School seventh-grade girls finished the season undefeated and took the title at last weekend’s Priest River Tournament.

The Lady Badgers, who were 12-0 for the season, defeated Priest River 46-33 in the championship game of the tournament.

Defense was the key as the Badgers built a 28-13 lead by half-time against Priest River, said coach Dan Myers. In the third quarter the Badgers exploded with 18 points, while holding the Warriors to 6, with Badger Jasmine Hill getting 10 of her game high 20 points in the quarter.

Abby Skeen chipped in 9 along with 6 assist, Savanna Woods added 8 with 8 rebounds and Kendra Merritt scored 8 and pulled in 14 rebounds.

In the opening game, the Lady Badgers beat Clark Fork 32-18.

The Badgers stifled Clark Fork with intense defensive pressure and accurate shooting to lead at the end of the first quarter 18-2, Myers said.

Hill led scorers with 9; Cheyenne Oyharsabal had 8 points with Emma Pluid and Kendra Merritt each adding 4.

The second game was a rematch with a much taller Lakeland team, Myers said. Again the defensive pressure by the Badgers was vital in the outcome of the game. Bonners Ferry won 38-8.

The Hawks were held to 8 points, while the Badgers had balanced scoring, led by Hill and Oyharsabal with 10 each, Merritt with 8, and Skeen and Woods with 4 each. Emma Pluid added 2.

For the season, Hill led scoring with 130, and Woods had 104 points. Merritt led in rebounds with 86 and Woods collected 71. Hill, Woods, Oyharsabal and Skeen each shot goals at 30 percent.

The team learned valuable skills in leadership, teamwork, commitment and work ethic, Myers said.

“It was a pleasure to be involved in the development of the girls during the season,” he said. “We would also like to offer a sincere “thank you” to the parents. Their support, encouragement and dedication were invaluable to the success of the team.”
