Watt breaks long-standing school record

The Bonners Ferry Badgers traveled to the Timberlake Invitational track meet in Spirit Lake Friday, and Colton Watt, who leads the state in both the 110 high hurdles and the 300 hurdles, blazed through the 300 intermediate hurdles in 39.89 seconds to break a 34-year-old school record set by Don Mackey, 40.3 seconds,  in 1974.

“He has been flirting with the record the last couple of meets,” said coach Travis Hinthorn. “He has gone to a different level physically and mentally. He is attacking the hurdles now.”

The Badger boys finished the meet in third place overall with 76 points. Timberlake won with 114 and Freeman came in second with 92.

Jacob Callister continued his winning streak in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 51.25, and he finished third in the 200 meter hurdles at 23.3. Watt finished second in the 110 hurdles with a 14.93 effort.

The two, along with Ben Horton and Blake Skjeveland, also finished second in the 4x200 relay, coming in with a time of 1:35.3, and ran with Horton and Jesse Gondek to take third in the 4x400 relay at 3:36.85.

Gondek took fourth place in the pole vault with an 11-06 jump and Horton took fifth in the triple jump at 37-08.

The Badger girls finished the tournament in 11th place with 23 points. Coeur d'Alene Charter won the event with 88 points, followed by Timberlake with 79.

Allyson Merrifield, Mikki Erickson, Amy Andrews and Olivia Langs finished third in the 3x200 relay, and Langs came in sixth in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 18.35. Jessica Merz finished fifth in the high jump with a 4-08 effort.

The girls led in a tri-meet against St. Maries and Kellogg April 27; beating St. Maries 92-35 and Kellogg 81-60.

Alicia Burnham ran away with the win in the 3200 meter run, coming in at 13:57. Aimee Sayers finished in third place at 14:10. Langs took the 100 high hurdles with a 17.6 second run and the girls took the 800 meter relay in 1:53.6.

Courtney Tucker won the 400 meter run with a time of 1:02.5 as well as the 200 meter run at 27.6. The Badger girls also took the 1600 meter relay at 4:23.3.

The boys had an equally impressive meet, downing Kellogg 87-62 and St. Maries 93-57.

Zach Hammond won teh 3200 meter run at 10:35.7, followed by Micah Krmpotich at 10:41.2 Watt took the 110 hurdles in 15.76 and the Badger boys won the 800 relay in 1:35.

Horton did 37' 11.5” to win the triple jump, Gondek took the long jump with an 18' 2.5” effort and Reid Bennet went 5'6” to win the high jump.

Taylor Tompke tied for the win in the pole vault at 11'6”, followed by Gondek, who reached an even six feet.

Callister took the 200 meter run with a time of 23.81.

The Badgers travel to Post Falls today for the District 1 Meet of Champions, and travel to districts May 14.
