Kootenai River Run gearing up for an extra fun run

| May 20, 2010 9:00 PM

This year’s annual Kootenai River Run is shaping up to be one of the more eclectic, memorable runs in its history.

The race starts at 9 a.m.  Saturday, June 12, at Boundary County Fairgrounds.  It’s been posted in over a dozen on line running websites, and there are registration forms at Far North Outfitters, Mugsy’s, Under the Sun, and Safeway.

Celebrating its 20-something birthday, The Kootenai River Run offers a challenging 5k and 10k course it’s become known for, winding through the neighborhoods of Bonners Ferry and ending back at the fairgrounds.  Tthis year  there will be a few fun additions.

A sound system is being put together to play a great mix of music throughout the event. Step-n-Strike aerobics instructor Wanda Wilkerson, will be providing the pre-race warm-up at 9 a.m.

Red Rooster Coffee Company will be on hand with their coffee cart and free samples, along with full-size cups of steaming coffee and bags of beans for purchase, so carry a few bucks in your sneaker.

“This year marks the inaugural “Battle of the Bands,” said Jim Cadnum, long-time  race organizer.

“Offering a great time for both runners and performers.”

Scattered along the race course will be various performances by folks like rock band The Epiphany with members Anthony Compton, Will Newhouse, Reid Boorman and Tyson Boorman.

There will be a 10-person Marimba band organized by Vicki Blake, an exotic routine by “Astara” the belly dancer, and contemporary mix band Aiden with members Mark Cingley, Patrick Lepoidivin, Cameron Fields and Squire Fields.

Austin Kerr and his group of friends will be performing, and Bonners Ferry’s own Restorium Renegades, complete with cow bells, whistles, and drums will be there to entertain runners.

Kathy Stalcup, Restorium activities director, said her group is already getting their instruments and costumes together.  Cash prizes will be awarded for the top three winners voted on at the end of the race by the runners.

Another new addition to this year’s race is a goody bag of coupons that can be used  in Bonners Ferry for a number of great discounts on services and entertainment.

Organizers never liked to ask for donations from our merchants, but this was a way to bring them business during tough economic times while offering nice savings for the coupon holders.

Northwest Academy, this year’s sponsor, is expected to bring 40 of its students to participate in the event.

There is  room on the course for more performances.  To claim a spot on the route, call Carolyn Testa at 290-7039.
