Barrel race
BONNERS FERRY — By the time the dust had settled and the barrels set, arena clear and timers working the third Bonners Ferry barrel series kicked off at 6:30 sharp.
Lynn Haworth drove the green and yellow John Deere tractor donated by Columbia Tractor Co. around the arena to smooth the ground out.
Athol, barrel racer Mikeala Timmins started the race with a 19.117 to take an early lead.
Later to follow, 15-year-old Cheyenne Brisson once again wowed the crowd and took over the lead with the only 18-second run of the night, 18.856.
This time was held for the entire race only to be followed closly by her mother, Julie Maguire for a second place finish in the 1D with a 19.026. Cheyenne took home $59.10 and Julie $39.40.
Rounding off the rest of the 1D was Mikaela Timmins and Naples rider Farryn Balch with a 19.246.
In the 2D, only one gal was able to place with a time of 19.585 and took home the biggest check of the evening, $91.15, which went into the pocket of 14-year-old Troy, Mont., cowgirl Jasmine Thill on her paint gelding Dusty.
Becky Calderone had some bad luck at the third barrel race. She was leading the 1D standings coming into the race, until the timer didn't stop during her race on the 19.
Due to the timer not stopping for her time, Becky was able to run again, and even though she didn't land in the 1D times as usual, she did take home the first place check for the 3D with a 19.951 and $48.81 stuffed into her Wrangler® jeans.
Troy, cowgirl Kim Thompson, has been having good luck in Bonners Ferry so far as she has pulled a check every race in the open and senior classes, and Wednesday was no exception as she pulled another check for second place in the 3D with a 19.986 and $32.54 to take back to Montana with her.
The rest of the 3D placings include Naples cowgirl Marcy Bloom with a 20.176 and Bonners Ferry cowgirl Casey Wyatt with a 20.645.
Heron, Mont., cowgirl, Amber Reimer, is currently leading the open 4D standings as she has consistently run and placed in the 4D all three races.
Reimer’s 20.902 put her in a perfect position to win the 4D and a $44.40 check.
Kailyn Hartt, from Post Falls, is another one who has consistently been placing in the 4D and took home a second place check in the 4D with her time of 20.902 and is sitting second in the open 4D standings.
Rounding out the rest of the 4D riders were Kay Vandenburg on her paint mare Tess with a 26.007. Unfortunately for Naples barrel racer Liz King and Sandpoint rider Lenora Norton both knocked a barrel or two to receive no times.
In the youth division, Cheyenne Brisson also dominated the 1D with a consistent 18.856 which happened to be the same time she ran in the open earlier that evening. Her check totaled $44.10 made her winning runs worth $103.20.
In the 3D, two Bonners Ferry cowgirls tied for a first place check; TeAta Montgomery on her gelding Buck and Casey Wyatt on her gelding Blaze to split $29.40. The rest of the 3D in the youth were Payton Jackson with a 21.832, TeAta Montgomery with a 24.827 and Leah Peycke with a 25.992.
Kim Thompson won the 1D senior division and took home $21.00 for her efforts.
The open $100 added money for the evening was sponsored by Dr. Dan Moore at Family Chiropractic.
Gate openers Jeff Thill, Allen Dye and Axel kept things running smoothly and barrel setters Cary Haworth and Jenna Magee made sure those barrels where set and ready to go.
The next race is at 6:30 p.m., on Wednesday, June 2 at Boundary County Fairgrounds. Visit www.pmbarrelseries.webs.com for more information and full results and standings.
