Two Bonners Ferry families are preparing the building to open Yoder’s Discount Grocery in the familiar old blue building on the south hill.

The building used to be the location of South Hill Video but has been vacant for several months.

Kenneth Wengerd and Henry Yoder are co-owners of the new grocery store and have set a goal to open on or near Nov. 1.

Yoder has a family of eight and knows well the price of groceries and what it costs to feed a large family and has had struggles of his own buying locally.

According to Yoder they will be getting items from brokers who carry discontinued or overstock items  in large warehouses and sell them to discount stores so they can sell things at a lower cost that regular grocery stores.  The items they carry will vary.

“If people see something here that is a really good deal yo better buy it because people might not see it again,” Yoder said.

Daniel and Carla Yoder will manage the store and family members will be on hand to help with stocking shelves and keeping things tidy.  They will run two check out stands.

The store will have a full line of groceries including, eggs, milk, butter and produce.  They also plan on accepting food stamps.

The Yoder’s and Wengerd’s hope one day that they will grow out of the blue south hill building expanding on their idea of selling items for less.

“We appreciate our local grocery stores and we need them,” said Yoder.  “Since our economy is so low people are struggling and driving out of town to buy their groceries.  Our goal is to help them buy making it so they can buy their groceries here and we want to see everyone be able to feed their families for less.”

Yoder’s Discount Grocery hours will be 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m.. to 2 p.m. on Saturday and closed on Sunday.
