Keeping landfill open important

| October 7, 2010 9:00 PM

Keeping the county landfill open is vitally important to Boundary County.

In the county commissioner race, I am voting for Orrin Everhart because he has provided excellent leadership on this issue.

The landfill operates under a small community exemption  As county commissioner in the 1990’s, Everhart was instrumental in obtaining the small community exemption.  His actions saves a critical service and saved significant tax dollars.

Without the exemption the landfill would have closed a process estimated to cost about one million dollars.  If the landfill is closed the county will have to truck garage out at an annual cost estimated between $360,000 and $500,000 according ti city council minutes of Sept. 19, 2009, and Sept. 30, 2008.

To maintain the small community exemption the landfill’s daily load must be under 20 tons. Active recycling programs have helped but they can be expanded and improved. Everhart will work with both county and city officials to get the most our of our recycling programs. Better recycling programs can save millions of tax dollars.

In the county commissioner rave I urge you to vote for Orrin Everhart.
