Badgers defeat Timberlake 8-1 in baseball action

Badgers senior Dan Mayzel pitched 6 strong innings giving up one run on three hits, striking out seven and walking four before junior Austin Wilson pitched a scoreless seventh inning to give the Badgers a 8–1 win over IML opponent Timberlake on Tuesday. 

The win raises the Badgers record to 3-5 overall and 3-0 in league.

After Mayzel struck out two in the top of the first inning, the Badgers scored four runs in the bottom half. 

Timberlake pitcher Tyler Shaffer walked the first batters and Mayzel and junior Alex Awbrey hit back to back singles. 

Awbrey’s single drove in two runs for Bonners Ferry. Later in the inning, senior Lance Abeyta scored Awbrey on a fielder’s choice to make the score 4-0.

Timberlake scored their lone run in the top half of the fourth after Austin Allen walked and later scored on Shaffer’s single to left. 

Bonners Ferry responded with two runs in the fifth inning when Mayzel started the inning off with a double off the fence in right center followed by another single from Awbrey. 

Senior Sean Conlin scored Mayzel and Awbrey with a two run single making the score 6-1. Bonners Ferry added insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning when senior Alek Lopez started the inning with a  screaming line shot through the second base hole followed by Wilson’s double to center scoring Lopez.

 Wilson later scored with yet another key single from Awbrey.

Mayzel finished the game going two for four with two runs scored, Awbrey went three for four with three RBI and two runs scored. Lopez, Wilson, Conlin and Abeyta each contributed with hits in the game.

Sweep Kellogg

After starting the season 0-5, the Bonners Ferry Badgers came out throwing strikes and swinging in route to their first two wins of the season.

  The Badgers pounded out 19 hits and 18 runs beating Kellogg twice, 11-10 and 7 -2.

Senior captain Alek Lopez went four for four at the plate scoring four times and hitting two doubles leading the Badgers to their first win of the season. 

Sean Conlin started the game on the mound giving up 10 runs in four innings and Austin Wilson came in and shut the Wildcats down giving up only two hits, with seven strike outs and no walks. 

The Badgers led 7 – 3 after three innings when Kellogg exploded for seven runs on six hits in the top of the fourth. 

Bonners Ferry responded with a run in the bottom half of the fourth, two more in the fifth inning tying the game through six innings. 

Senior pitcher Austin Wilson gave up a one out double in the top of the seventh and got out of the inning leaving the Wildcats stranded on second base. 

In the bottom of seventh, Lopez led off with a double down the right field line.  Conlin attempted to bunt him over to third and laid down a bunt that was picked up by the third baseman and thrown to first. 

The throw was wide and Lopez scored on the error giving the Badgers a wild 11-10 win. Pitcher Austin Wilson got the win (1-0).

In the second game the Badgers came out swinging again in game two collecting 10 hits. They were led by Alek Lopez, Austin Wilson junior Alex Awbrey, and Sean Conlin each getting two hits in the game. The Badger pitchers struck out 16 Kellogg Wildcats.

Junior pitcher Josiah Owinyo got his first win of the season (1-0) striking out nine batters, walking seven while giving up only three hits in the game.  Senior Dan Mayzel pitched in relief striking out seven batters, two walks and no hits for Kellogg.

In the top of the first, Kellogg scored two runs on two hits and a walk.  After that, Owinyo shut the Wildcats down. Bonners Ferry responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning and scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth with hits from Lopez, Wilson, Awbrey, Conlin, and Owinyo. 

Bonners Ferry added another run in the sixth inning making the score 7-2.

The Badgers will host the Sandpoint Bulldogs at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 16 for a double header match up. Come out and support the Badgers.
