Is the Levy essential to our schools?

| April 14, 2011 7:20 AM

Levy dollars fund the day-to-day operations of the district’s educational programs, bridging the gap between the funding provided by the state and the cost of meeting the educational needs of our students based on the desires of our community to create quality schools for our students and keep them safe.

Is the levy saving jobs and protecting our economy?

The school district is the largest employer in Boundary County.  With the passage of the levy, layoffs can be avoided for full time and part time certified and support staff.

Key positions include: classroom, remediation and special education assistants, bus drivers, secretaries, technology support, custodians, maintenance…all critical positions which support the district’s day-to-day operations.

Is this the right time to be asking the community for funding?  Past levies have enabled the district to provide its programs beyond state minimums.  Unfortunately, reliance on the levy has changed from supplemental to essential funding, mostly due to the state’s severe cuts in funding.
