Educate yourself about the real levy facts

| April 21, 2011 6:44 AM

Could we vote to add a 1 cent sales tax to help fund our schools?

This is called a local option sales tax. We are not classified as an Idaho resort county so we are not eligible. Timber and agriculture are our county’s mainstays, not tourism. Laws can only be changed by contacting the legislature.

Could we sell advertising on the sides of the school buses to help with some cost?

No, Senate bill 1111, which would have allowed this, failed April 6 , 2011.

Quick facts:

Four out of five students at the High School are involved in extracurricular activities.(not just sports)

Cost per student for pay to participate in extracurricular would be about $500.

The old high school property was sold  June of 2006 to a man from Hope for $130,000. For several years that money was set aside as our emergency fund but is now being used due to state cuts.

Only 37.5 precent of the registered voters in Boundary County voted on March 8.

We would like to give everyone a chance to be heard. Just as everyone has the right to vote, the BCSD has the right to rerun a levy to try and get the funds it needs.

Class sizes will be increasing due to state cuts, even if the levy passes.

The Boundary County School system is a corner stone to success and growth of our little town. No part of our community thrives alone, but instead, all parts are connected and depend on the success of another.

I am a wife, a proud mother of a seventh grader and a sophomore, a volunteer, a homeowner, a small business owner. I am a taxpayer. I am honest and hard working.  I love Boundary County. I am dedicated to doing the best job I can as a school board member.  I do not get paid for being a school board member, yet, I spend endless hours at meetings, reading and trying to learn the gobs of information about how our school system works.

I am always on the look out to find ways it can be improved even though there are many road blocks. Why? Because I care about our kids and community. I believe the only way to make where you live a better place is to be involved.

Remember if information seems too horrible or unbelievable to be true, it probably is. Get educated and I don’t mean by your neighbor or the guy sitting across from you at the restaurant.
