Voting yes for levy about doing one's part for our community
The recent levy was defeated and is now being re-run. Ms. Donna Capurso, head of the Republican Party locally, sent an email out to Republicans urging all to enlist more friends and neighbors in voting no again, hopefully by a wider margin. She wants the voters to deliver a message of no to the board of trustees.
The actual substance of the message is missing: it seems that no is generally a good enough position and needs no elaboration.
What would I actually be voting no for? No to asking me to give a small amount more to keep the educational system from further eroding? No to any message that there is an educational system here that meets the needs of educating youth to the global challenges coming their way? No to letting businesses know that there is a supportive environment that attracts new industry and workers? No to educational personnel who have actually lost purchasing power steadily the past several years? No to retaining qualified teachers? No to the long term health and prosperity of the community? No to activities that we know give our children an alternative to drugs and mischief? No to, well, any intelligent approach that fosters a sense of ownership and pride in public education?
Maybe Ms. Capurso is right ignorance and scarcity should win the election. All it takes is coming out to vote No or staying home with your yes.
And what might that yes be? Yes to supporting public education, yes to opportunities for youth, yes to retaining dedicated personnel, yes to taking care of one key element of attracting new business, yes to taking care of our community’s children. Yes to us doing our part to meet this community’s need for better education.
