Badger men lose one-win one

The Bonners Ferry varsity men’s basketball had an down and up week, suffering a tough 53-58 loss to Kellogg while finding the toughness to defeat Timberlake 66-58.

With Kellogg, the Badgers found themselves tied at the end of the first and second periods and with a 1 point lead after the third. Bonners Ferry just could not hold off Kellogg in the fourth, losing a hard fought game 53-58.  Varsity head coach Clint Arthur noted that “Alex Mendez had five rebounds and two steals to go along with his ten points, Aaron Moe had seven assists, and Alek Lopez had 4.”

Arthur continued “Overall, I thought we played well.  We played with intensity the entire game, but we took too many chances at times on defense and failed to communicate several times; as a result, we gave up too many easy points.”

The Badgers had an opportunity for redemption Saturday night against Timberlake. Bonners Ferry finished the first period with a lead and held that lead through most of the game, but Timberlake did make a challenge late in the night. Coach Arthur commented on the effort, “It was great to finally pull out a win. With the game on the line in the last two minutes, we demonstrated the mental toughness to finish.”

Bonners Ferry went on to win the Timberlake IML matchup 66-58 made possible by the team shooting 7 for 8 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter and individual efforts from  Aaron Moe and Alex Mendez hit two apiece in the final 90 seconds.

The Badger men and women’s varsity next face Priest River this Thursday night at home.
