The annual Fill the Bus food drive held on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was a success again this year, according to volunteer Pam Moe.

On Monday, 77 student and teacher  volunteers from Boundary County School District , students from Echo Springs and retired teachers and more showed up to help load 2,580 pounds of food into two school district buses.

The buses were weighed at General Feed and Grain after they were loaded with all of the food and household donated items.

The buses took the food to Community Action Partnership food bank in Bonners Ferry.

“Although the weight was less than last year there were more items, the pile is what determines the amount, as all items vary in weight,” Moe explained.

Christina Villanueva heads up the food bank and told Moe that she thought the pile of food was much larger than last year.

“We are so grateful to Safeway for the presale bags of food and to both Safeway and Harvest Foods for letting us set up at their stores,” said Moe.

There was also $396.60 in cash donations collected for the food bank.

“We are also grateful to Boundary County School District for allowing us to use the busses for the day to transport all the donated food,” Moe said.
