Will school board eliminate voting process of closing schools

| January 27, 2011 11:12 AM

I am writing in response to the alarming article, Boundary District working to change rules on Naples school vote, in the Nov. 24 issue of the Herald.

Earlier this year I witnessed the Naples community rally together to prevent the closure of Naples School, and by a county-wide vote it succeeded in that effort.

To learn that an attempt is now in progress by the school board to eliminate the voting process on such a high impact measure is very unsettling. It not only flies in the face of the democratic system, but sets a dangerous precident.

I’m sure most of us have read the lopsided statistics regarding how much stronger participation is in general elections as oppose to  local elections, yet the local elections that have direct and far greater effect on our daily lives.

Many people cast a suspicious eye towards Washington with concerns that their rights are erroding at the hands of the Whitehouse and Congress. However, history repeatedly demonstrates that people are conditioned toward change at the local level.

When a vote is taken away, it is never given back. If we allow the elected board of a local tax based institution to pursue the repeal of our vote in order to facilitate it’s agenda, then we need not worry about Washington.

We’ve already laid our liberties at the feet of local politicians and loaded ourselves onto the proverbial cattle car.
