Kayakers rescued from Moyie
Emergency crews arrive on the Moyie River near Meadowcreek campground to assist two people who lost control of their kayak on the racing river.
The roaring rivers have made for dangerous kayaking, just ask Joshua Bean, 30, of Montana.
On Sunday May 29, at approximately 3:01 p.m., a call to the Boundary County Sheriff’s office said two people and a kayak were in trouble yelling for help on the Moyie River near Meadowcreek campground.
Bean and an unnamed female passenger over turned their kayak in the racing waters.
Boundary County first responders including Sheriff, Greg Sprungl, the sheriff’s posse, four sheriff deputies, Boundary Volunteer ambulance, North Bench Fire Department, Boundary Search and Dive rescue and Idaho State Police arrived on the scene 20 minutes later to assist the kaykers.
“The posse aircraft had just taken off when the ground crew found the two people,” said Boundary County Sheriff Deputy Rich Stephens.
Evelyn and Jim Williams residents on Placer Creek Road let the crews position themselves in their front yard while they helped the kayakers onto the bank of the river.
“The Williams’ were so helpful and gracious allowing us to set up and camp out in their front yard,” Stephens said.
The crew spent about two hours on scene helping the kayakers get to safety. Bean was transported to Boundary Community Hospital with cold water related injury and later released.
“People should use caution on the rivers, there is so much water and power and along with log jams and debris it is increasing the danger,” said Stephens.
