Bonners Ferry Badgers varsity team lost to Priest River at the district tournament on Wednesday  in overtime with a score of 67 to 64.

Overall, we played our best game of the year against Priest River on Wednesday,”  said coach Clint Arthur.

“Defensively, we took them out of any sort of team rhythm, and the only way they could score on a consistent basis was by isolating their two best players.”

Arthur said the team defended the Spartans fairly well but the Spartans pulled off a lot of tough shots. The offense made great decisions all night and moved the ball well in the half court set taking advantage of our size underneath the basket.

“ We missed a few easy opportunities throughout the game, though, which ended up costing us in the end,” Arthur said.  “Our three missed free throws in the fourth quarter really hurt.”

The Badgers played against Kellogg Friday and Arthur said there were too many turnovers by the Badgers to win the game, and lost to Kellogg 64 to 52, ending their hopes to go to state.

The Badgers started off slow according to Arthur, with Kellogg out hustling the Badgers playing more aggressively on the defensive end.

“Instead of playing an up tempo style that we prefer, Kellogg slowed us down and made us play in the half court,” said Arthur.  “We came out a little more inspired in the second half though and pulled within six at 36-30.”

After that, Arthur said the Badgers fell apart.  Kellogg went on a 14-7 run to end the quarter, and we could not catch them in the fourth.

“ It was disappointing, especially after how we played against Priest River, but that's the way sports go, Arthur said.  “You can never tell when you will have a bad day, and we picked the wrong day to have that sort of game.”

On Mat Evans making All-League:

At the All-League meeting last week, the coaches rated the top ten players in the league and after the results were tallied Badger senior Mat Evans finished in the top ten.

“He has scored fairly consistently for us all year, which most opposing coaches can see in the box score, said coach Clint Arthur. “In my view, though, Mat has made huge strides this year in ramping up his defense and rebounding.  Mat makes a conscious effort to block out on every play; also, he has taken several charges this year. In addition, over the past few weeks, he has seen the floor much better, creating scoring opportunities for team mates. He is definitely a deserving candidate for All-League.”
