Moyie River, Eastport resients prepare for floods

| March 3, 2011 7:05 AM

BONNERS FERRY — Several property owners living along the upper Moyie River and near Eastport received letters from Boundary County Commissioners asking them to prepare for possible flooding.

According to commissioners the spring melt off this year shouldn’t be excessive due to the fact it the snow is melting slowly over a longer time.

However the commissioners felt it necessary to send the letters , particularly to reach those snow birds who live out of state, to inform them it is their responsibility to protect their property.

They can do the wok themselves or hire someone to protect buildings that lie within the flood zones.

During high run-off years, the county makes sandbags available to homeowners for free, as well as provide sand in a central location.

Commissioners  encourage absentee property owners to notify Hall Mountain Fire, P.O. Box 159, Eastport, ID 83826, (208) 267-7375, to make them aware of the location of their structure and how they can be reached should damage occur.
