Philbrook plays hockey with Creston team
Fourteen-year-old Nathan Philbrook of Bonners Ferry has been involved in the Creston Valley Minor Hockey program for 10 years.
“There have been other kids from Bonners Ferry who have played on the team but this year Nathan was the only one not from Creston,” Nathan’s father Rick Philbrook said.
Rick Philbrook is also a team trainer for the Creston Chiefs.
The season starts in September and runs until March with a week off during Christmas.
The team practices two times a week for the younger kids and three times a week for the older more advanced kids.
Cost for the season is around $360 depending on the age of the child and the ice time required for the bracket they will be playing in. There is a hockey equipment swap sale at the recreation center every fall for kids needing equipment.
This year the team record was 31/12/2 and they won the East Kootenay Minor Hockey championship beating Kimberly in a dominant fashon by the score of 6-2 in Kimberly.
Philbrook, No. 14, plays defense at over 6 feet tall and almost 160 pounds with deceptively smooth speed and a ready willingness to bang the boards was a very important part of the teams success this year.
Strong consistant play and by winning the battles in the corners Philbrook was able to keep the shots on his goalie to a minimum.
