Richard B. "Dick" Washington, Jr.

Richard B. "Dick" Washington, Jr. passed away peacefully at the age of 94 on March 3, 2011 at the Valley Vista Care Center in Sandpoint.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 30, 2011, at 2 p.m. in the Bonners Ferry Funeral Home in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, with military rites by the Idaho National Guard.

Dick had spent 16 happy years in the Restorium in Bonners Ferry until relocating to Valley Vista on Feb. 11 of this year. Dick was born January 16, 1917 in Alexandria, Virginia, one of seven children.

He took pride in being a descendent of George Washington's brother. After graduation from Episcopal High School in Alexandria he attended Radio and Electronics School in Washington, D.C.

He then began law school but entered the Navy before finishing. He spent his post-war career as a technician on simulators with airlines, retiring after 20 years with United in Denver.

He enjoyed sharing memories of his Navy days, serving from 1941-1945. While in the Navy he married Mildred Smith and had two children, Richard Washington, III and Rilla Marshall.

Following his divorce, he married Louise Sanders Sandstead in Denver, Colo., in 1975. They moved together to the Restorium in August 1995.

 He is survived by his children, stepdaughter Judy Dirks and husband Larry of Bonners Ferry, one grandson, Cedric, and seven step-grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
