Bonners Ferry will operate two recycling drop-off points for a two-month trial period to check effectiveness.

The trial period strted on Nov. 10 and will run through Jan. 10.

The city will monitor how many times will need to have Bonners Ferry Garbage transport the recyclables to the landfill.

Bonners Ferry Garbage and city officials will be in communication as to whether people are abusing the bins by placing regular garbage into them.

David Sims, assistant city administrator, said he hopes the program will prove effective.

“We encourage people to use this service, we have been working on a plan for a long time and finally came up with the two-month trial period,” Sims said. “If people put regular garbage in them it just won’t work, that is part of the reason for the trial period.”

There will be two dumpsites at each location. One will be for glass and one for co-mingled recyclables, including mixed paper, newspaper, magazines, flattened card board, No.1 through No. 7 plastics and metal and aluminum cans. All recyclable containers should be rinsed before dumping them.

The first location will be at Bonners Ferry Middle School in the parking lot between the band building and Well Life Pharmacy. The second location will be at Panhandle Health parking lot behind the Restorium.

The sites are open 24 hours seven days a week.

“It ill save people a lot of time driving back and forth from the landfill,” Sims said.  “If this works the dumpsites will be kept here permanently.”

During the trial Sims believes the dumpsite set up at Safeway on first and third Wednesday of the month will still be in place.
