Badgers soccer blank Maniacs 6-0; win league title
The Bonners Ferry Badger Boy’s soccer team claimed the Intermountain League title Saturday with a 6–0 victory over Orofino on Senior Day at Lindberg Field.
Badger Seniors Daniel Palacios, Ken Pew, Hayden Wakkinen, and Andre Zarate finished their four-year careers in style with the decisive win.
Zarate assisted on the first two goals, the first by junior midfielder Keaton Tremble in the seventh minute and the second by midfielder Palacios in the 12th, to give Bonners an early 2-0 lead.
Tremble added his second goal of the day in the 28th minute, and Zarate tallied just before half off an assist from sophomore forward Victor Mendez to give the Badgers a 4–0 lead at the half.
Midfielder Wakkinen scored off another Mendez assist in the 48th minute, and Zarate completed the scoring in the 61st with an unassisted goal, his IML-leading 15th of the season.
Bonners Ferry outshot the Maniacs 22–4, with junior goalkeeper Garrett Skeen recording four saves.
n The District I-II playoffs are this weekend at Lakeland High School in Rathdrum. The Badgers will play at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 15 in the district championship game against the winner of Friday’s game matching Orofino and St. Maries, with the winner of Saturday’s game claiming the IML’s lone boy’s berth to the State tournament the following week in Caldwell.
