Doris Ellen (MacDonald) Howard, 91

Doris Ellen (MacDonald) Howard, 91, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Aug. 11, 2012, in Boundary Community Hospital, following years of loving in-home care by her daughter, Virginia Lee.

Memorial services were held on Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2012, at the United Methodist Church in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, at 3 p.m., with the Rev. Karen M. Davidson officiating.

Burial followed in Grandview Cemetery.

Doris was born on Dec. 29, 1920, in Tompkins, Saskatchewan, Canada, to American parents, Donald James MacDonald and Amelia Ellen (McKay) MacDonald.

The family moved to a farm in Boundary County in 1928. She attended grade school in Bonners Ferry and graduated from Bonners Ferry High School in 1939.

Her work during her lifetime included grocery clerk and restaurant waitress.

Doris married Lester Lee Howard on Dec. 29, 1940.

Their children are Virginia Lee Howard Hoglan Weller and Robert Earl Howard and wife Judy.

She is survived by four grandchildren, Lauring, Heidi, John and Leslie; six great-grandchildren: Kirsten, Kaitlyn, Ramsey, Daniel, John and Elizabeth; She also is survived by four sisters: Donalda and husband, Myrel; Annie; Jessie and husband, Paul; and Ruth; two brothers, Dan and wife, Karlene; Kenneth and wife, Karen; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and four brothers, Alan, Jim, Bill and Ralph.

During her life she had and still belonged to the following at the time of her death: United Methodist Church for more than 50 years; American Legion Auxiliary for more than 50 years (served as Idaho state president); Methodist Women’s Club; Friends of the Restorium; the Pythian Sisters order of Eastern Star; and Boundary County Museum.

Doris enjoyed playing old-time fiddle tunes and competed in national fiddle contests in Weiser, Idaho, for many years. She received numerous trophies and plaques over the years.

Doris was an avid bowler and wrote a bowling article for the Bonners Ferry Herald. She also spent many hours playing the fiddle for the residents at Ace Elder Care and the Community Restorium.

A highlight of her life was being named Fairest of the Fair at the Boundary County Fair.

Doris was very much loved by her family and friends and will be sorely missed.
