Shooting athletes of the Libby Rock Crushers competed in the first annual Tri-State Triple Challenge in Coeur d’Alene Saturday, Nov. 17, and in their first competition, a local athlete was runner-up.

The Scholastic Clays Target Program (SCTP) hosted a fun shoot in Coeur d’Alene to challenge the skills of young men and women competing in trap, skeet and sporting clays.

SCTP was started several years ago to provide more opportunities for middle-, high- and college-aged students to compete as a team in clay-shooting disciplines.

The Libby Rock Crushers team was started in June of this year and consists of athletes from Libby Middle/High School and Bonners Ferry High School. The athletes who competed are Roy Hyde, Dameon Kelch, both of Libby, Mont.; and Colton Moore of Bonners Ferry. Their coaches are Mike Cirian and Tom Bailey.

The fun shoot was highly competitive with more than 60 student athletes vying for top honors. Even with such fierce competition the Rock Crushers did exceedingly well for their first tournament as a team and as individuals. Colton Moore won runner-up in the trap event in the Intermediate class.

SCTP is focused on providing a supportive team-based environment, using clay-target sports as the catalyst, for teaching life lessons and skills that emphasize positive character traits and citizenship values as well as learning a terrific sport.
