Youth wrestlers place at State Championships

Local youth hit the mats last weekend at the state championships and brought home six medals. Seven members of the Bonners Ferry Wrestling Club traveled to Shelley to wrestle in the USA Idaho Wrestling Folkstyle State Championships on Saturday, Dec. 1.

Eli Richards, Intermediate division, wrestled his way earn the state champion title. Marcus Regehr, bantam, and Evan Barajas, intermediate, both placed second in their respective divisions. Kyle Smith, Intermediate, placed third, and Savannah Rickter, bantam, and Jackson Rickter, intermediate division, placed sixth. Jesse Bradley wrestled in the Schoolboy division.

“The kids did really well,” said coach Corey Richards. “They represented Bonners Ferry both on and off the mat.” Richards said restaurants commented on how well-mannered the kids acted.

The trip to the championships was made possible through fundraising by the Travis and Julie Smith family and by Linda Hall, who loaned her suburban for the drive.

BONNERS FERRY — After a slow start, the Badgers couldn’t catch up to Lakeland at the home game on Dec. 1. Lakeland won 51-23 over the Badgers.

Lakeland had heavy pressure defense and played hard according to Badger coach Clint Arthur. The Badgers had a slow start defensively but then played normal. The Badgers held to 27 points for the remaining three quarters.

“Josh Pluid had a solid game down low,” said Arthur. “Ryan Farrens had good energy in the first half.”

Three-point goals were made by Badgers Moe, Evans and Skeen, and Lakeland’s Horne, Carr, Derrick, Bayley and McCade.

Also on Saturday, Dec. 1, the JV team had a really good game over Lakeland, winning 30-29. The C Team was defeated by Lakeland 46-26.
