One of the best meteor showers of the year peaks tonight. The Geminid meteor shower lasts all week, but the peak nights are Dec. 13/14 and Dec. 14/15.
The Geminid meteor shower produces 50 or more meteors per hour with the most falling around 2 a.m. local time.
The new moon on Dec. 13 will guarantee dark nights for viewing the peak of the meteor shower.
Most meteor showers originate from comets, but the Geminid meteor shower originates from an Apollo (near-Earth) asteroid.
