Girls 6-9 overall, 2-3 in league
The Bonners Ferry High School girls varsity basketball team traveled all last week and came out winning two games and losing two.
The varsity girls are now 6-9 overall and 2-3 in league, with two league losses to Priest River who is ranked fourth in state and one to Timberlake.
The Badgers basketball team played Lake City’s junior varsity Monday beating them 46-41.
According to coach Travis Hinthorn the Badgers started off a little sluggish as this was third away game in four days.
The team rallied in the second half after being down 11 points in the first.
“We just didn’t get back defensively in the first half,” said Hinthorn. “Once we took care of the ball and put more pressure on the, we made a great come back.”
Seniors Jordan Porter and Jenna Gust combined for 19 points in the second half.
Savannah Woods had 10 points including six out of eight free throws.
Courtney Tucker provided a huge defense with four steals, two assists and three points in the second half also.
On Saturday, Jan. 28, the varsity girls played at Timberlake and lost 44-35.
The Badgers were outscored by 10 points in the second quarter and down 11 points for the half. The team rallied to trail 34-33 with three minutes left in the game.
Timberlake held on for the win.
Porter had an outstanding game scoring 16 points and making 13 rebounds.
At Kellogg on Jan. 27, the Badgers won 64-37.
The Badgers jumped ahead 15-5 at the beginning of the game with full court pressure.
“The girls had balanced scoring with six players coring seven or more points.
Led by freshman Jasmine Hill with 14 points. Hill only recently moved up to varsity. Freshman Abby Skeen played what Hinthorn said was her best game of the year with seven points, six rebounds, 10 assists and no turnovers.
At home on Jan. 24, the Badgers lost a close battle against the Priest River Spartans with a score of 38-31.
“If we can hold them below 40 we give ourselves a much better chance of winning,” said coach Travis Hinthorn. “We are getting better, we’re going to peak at the end of the season just like we want to.”
