A Naples man charged with the second-degree murder of Anna Old passed a competency evaluation and will face a judge for the crime.

John August Funkhouser, 61, faces 10 years to life in prison for the Nov. 4, 2011, murder of  Old, 43, also of Naples.

According to court records, Funkhouser called 911 on Friday, Nov. 4 and told dispatchers  he wanted to report a murder. He then told the dispatcher he shot and killed Old in the Deep Creek Loop home they shared.

According to reports, sheriff’s deputies arrived at the home and found Old. who appeared to have been dead for some time. She had a wound that appeared consistent with Funkhouser’s statement that he’d shot her once in the back of the head.

“She had been dead for an undetermined amount of time when we arrived on scene,” said Rich Stephens, Boundary County Chief Deputy Sheriff. “A single gunshot is what killed her.”

Funkhouser told both deputies and later an Idaho State Police investigator that he had he shot Old and he was taken into custody without incident.

In December, Funkhouser’s public defender Serra Woods, requested the preliminary hearing be postponed so the defendant can undergo a competency evaluation.

Funkhouser remains in the Boundary County jail on a $1 million bond.

The preliminary hearing is  scheduled for 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 10,  before Judge Justin Julian at Boundary County Courthouse.
