Moved back to town and started school at the Old South Side wooden school house. Dad attended fourth grade thru eighth in the South Side brick building. During the 1st half of the seventh grade, he went to school in the Lindberg School House while helping with chores and staying with Frank and Edna Bucher. The 2nd half of the year he was back at the South Side School. The summer before his Junior Year he joined the 3 C's. He was sent to Chatcolet where he was on a crew that chipped rock for Rocky Point and also spent part of that summer fighting fire. After Graduation from Bonners Ferry High School, he worked for Safeway. Then worked at the Service Station on the North Side helping deliver diesel to the holding tank at the Continental Mine, leaving red paint on Canadian lumber trucks that he met on the road. Dad also hauled fuel to stations and farms and unloaded G.N. tank cars.
He joined the Navy in October 1942 getting on a troop train from California in Spokane. Dad said one kid from California was bare footed because someone threw his shoes out the window. Dad wanted to be an Aircraft Mechanic so he was shipped to Norman, Ok. Graduating May 1943 Aviation Machinist Mate 3rd Class.
