Harvey Scott
Beloved husband and father, Harvey Scott, passed away on Jan. 30, 2012 in Colville at the age of 87.
He was born on Feb. 22, 1924 to W.B. and Emma (Thompson) Scott in Bonners Ferry, Idaho.
A funeral service for Harvey Scott was held a Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012 at the Danekas Funeral Chapel in Colville, Wash.
Harvey grew up in Bonners Ferry and graduated from Bonners Ferry High School. He went to the University of Idaho until he was drafted into the United States Army in 1942.
He was sent to the University of Tennessee to train as an X-ray technician. After training, he was sent to a U.S. Army base in Scotland, then transferred to Wales until the war was over in 1945. His father had bought into the Statesman Index in Colville, so Harvey returned to his parent’s home in Colville where he went to work for the Violette Funeral Home.
He and Barbara Loven, and his sister Lucille Scott and Paul Robey were married in a double ceremony in 1948.
Harvey went to Mortuary College in Los Angeles to train as a funeral director and came back to work for the Violette Funeral Home and later worked for the Wessa Funeral Home in St, Maries, Idaho. As a reservist, he was called to serve in the Korean War and spent a year in California at the Hamilton Air Force Base as an X-ray technician.
Harvey returned to the University of Idaho where he graduated in 1955 as a member of Phi Beta Kappa, with a degree in journalism, followed by a quarter at Eastern Washington University to earn his teaching certificate.
He went to work for the Kettle Falls School District where he started the Distributive Education Program (DECA), and taught English, journalism, Spanish, German and was the yearbook advisor.
He taught school for 25 years and during the summer, he worked for the US Forest Service as an aerial observer, spotting forest fires in the Colville National Forest.
During the school year, Harvey volunteered as an EMT for the Stevens County Sheriff’s Ambulance, working nights and weekends. He retired from the Kettle Falls School District in 1980 and continued with the US Forest Service as a road maintenance supervisor and EMT, tending injured firefighters in fire camps in the western United States. After he retired from the Forest Service in 1990, he and Barbara lived on their farm near Rice, Wash.
Harvey was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Quillisascut Grange and spent many hours volunteering his time to the Air Explorer Post of the Boy Scouts of America as a pilot and glider pilot in order for the young scouts to earn their glider pilot license.
Harvey was preceded in death by his brothers Ray Scott, Gordon Scott and his sister Marie Macomber.
He is survived by his wife Barbara Loven Scott; his daughters Joyce Scott (Jerry Shively) and Lisa Scott (Harry Hamlin); his son Steve Scott (Tammy Anderson); his grandchildren Brett Pace, Stephanie Pace, Tiffany Pace and Maggie Scott; his great grandchild Kailyn Barrett; his sisters Lois Hoskins (Bill), Lucille Robey (Paul); his brothers Warren Scott and Duane Scott (Shirley Rainwater); and numerous nieces and nephews.
