Badgers sweep Wildcats in IML baseball

The Bonners Ferry baseball team continued their winning ways sweeping the Kellogg Wildcats on Saturday 7-2 & 11-9.  The Badgers have won 5 of their last 6 games and are currently in 3rd place in the IML going into the last week of the season.

Game 1 – Bonners Ferry struck first with two runs in the first inning when Josiah Owinyo reached on an error and Alex Awbrey walked.  

Owinyo scored on Mike Clarkson’s RBI single and Awbrey scored on a passed ball.  Kellogg added a run in the bottom of the first when Hayden Garner walked and scored on Casey Jerome’s RBI single.  In the fifth, Shane Miller reached on an error and scored when Alex Cunningham hit an RBI single to left.  The Badgers added a run in the sixth inning after Matt Gray hit a single and scored on a sacrifice fly from Owinyo.

With the score 4-1 going into the seventh, the Badgers added three insurance runs with two outs in the inning. Cunningham, John Brown and Gray all walked to load the bases and all eventually scored. The Wildcats got one more run in their half of the seventh.  Senior pitcher Alex Awbrey got the win.

Game 2 – The Badgers scored two runs in the first when Shane Miller ripped a triple to left center and later scored on Alex Awbrey’s RBI single.  

Mike Clarkson’s RBI single scored Awbrey.  Kellogg scored in the bottom of the second with two outs when Owinyo walked back to back hitters and one run scored on a passed ball.  With the Badgers leading 2–1 going into the third inning, Bonners Ferry added a run when Awbrey singled and later scored on a single from Jesse Woods.  Kellogg took the lead in their half of the third scoring three runs to make the score 4-3.  

In the fifth inning, Garrett Skeen hit a two out double to left center and later scored to tie the game but Kellogg came back with a run in their half to maintain the lead.

In the sixth inning, Bonners Ferry again took the lead scoring two runs to make the game 6-5 when Owinyo reached first after being hit by a pitch.  Miller hit a single and both later scored.  In the seventh, the Badgers erupted for five runs on no hits when the Wildcat pitcher could not find the strike zone.  There was two walks, one hit batter and three errors in the inning.  

However, Kellogg wasn’t finished as they scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.  Dustin Hendzel hit a three run home run but it wasn’t enough as Bonners Ferry outlasted Kellogg 11-9 to finish the game.

Pitcher Mike Clarkson got the win improving his season record  3-0.

The Badger’s host Priest River this Saturday for their final regular season games and celebrate senior day recognizing five seniors.  First game starts at 10 a.m.  Please join the baseball team and support the outgoing senior players.
